The Dark Side of Taurus and the Marathonian Bull

In both astrology and mythology, symbols often carry layers of meaning that reflect human archetypes like shared experiences and characteristics. The astrological sign Taurus and the mythological figure of the Marathonian Bull offer an intriguing parallel when exploring their darker aspects.

Taurus

Taurus is the second sign of the zodiac, ruled by Venus. It is associated with qualities such as stability, practicality, and sensuality. However, like all zodiac signs, Taurus has a shadow side. The dark side of Taurus can manifest as stubbornness, possessiveness, and a resistance to change.

We can find the positive aspects of Taurus in the legend of Adonis.

The mythical bull

The Cretan Bull is one of the most famous bulls in Greek mythology. It is best known for its role in the Labors of Heracles (Hercules). The bull was originally sent by Poseidon to King Minos of Crete as a sign of favor. Minos was supposed to sacrifice the bull to Poseidon, but he decided to keep the magnificent creature instead. Angered by this, Poseidon cursed the bull, making it wild and uncontrollable.

The bull’s dangerous nature is emphasized by its role in the birth of the Minotaur. Queen Pasiphae, Minos’ wife, fell in love with the bull due to Poseidon’s curse, leading to the birth of the Minotaur, a half-man, half-bull creature.

Later on, as part of his twelve labors, Heracles was tasked by king Eurystheus with capturing the Cretan Bull. After the bull was captured by Heracles during his Seventh Labor, it was brought back to King Eurystheus. The king, frightened by the bull, released it. Eventually, the bull found its way to the region of Marathon in Attica.

In Marathon, he terrorized the local inhabitants, destroying crops, property. All these were causing a great deal of chaos and fear. The people of Marathon were desperate for a solution to rid themselves of this dangerous creature.

Theseus, the legendary hero and future king of Athens, came to the aid of the people of Marathon. With his exceptional strength and cunning, he managed to subdue the wild creature.

After capturing the Marathonian Bull, Theseus brought it back to Athens. The bull was then sacrificed to the gods, likely to Athena or Apollo, as a sign of gratitude and to seek divine favor. This act not only ended the terror caused by the bull but also reinforced Theseus’ reputation as a protector and hero.

Taurus and the mythical bull

Like the mythological bull, the Taurus archetype can embody an unwavering determination to uphold our beliefs and retain control over our lives. When we fully embrace the Taurus archetype and decide upon a course of action, it can indeed be incredibly challenging to sway our resolve. This stubbornness often leads to inflexibility and difficulty adapting to new situations or alternative perspectives, potentially resulting in conflicts within relationships and detrimentally affecting our overall well-being.

The bull’s dominance over the region of Marathon serves as a stark illustration of territorial possessiveness. It imposed its presence and power over the land, instilling fear and chaos. Similarly, the Taurus archetype instills within us a deep desire for security and stability, which can sometimes manifest as possessive behavior and an unwillingness to let go. Just as the bull’s territorial instincts led to chaos, our own tendencies towards possessiveness and materialism can result in unhealthy attachments to material objects and toxic relationships. Does this sound familiar?

The bull’s presence disrupted the harmony of Marathon, creating an environment rife with fear and instability. This havoc is contrary to the intentions associated with the Taurus archetype. While under the influence of Taurus, we typically seek routine and predictability. However, despite our best intentions, our stubbornness, possessiveness, and inability to let go can often lead to significant problems and upheaval in our lives.

How to deal with these negative tendencies?

In the first place, it’s crucial for us to recognize when our Taurus tendencies manifest negatively in our lives. Whether it’s our stubbornness, possessiveness, and materialism, acknowledging these patterns it the initial step towards addressing them. By becoming aware of how these tendencies impact on us and others we empower ourselves to make positive changes.

Communication plays a pivotal role in overcoming negative Taurus traits. Rather than stubbornly clinging to our own perspectives, we must be willing to engage in open and honest dialogue with others. Actively listening to differing viewpoints and practicing empathy allows us to find common ground and resolve conflicts constructively.

Setting boundaries is essential for maintaining our well-being while managing our Taurus tendencies. While stability and security are important to us, it’s essential to recognize when our possessiveness becomes excessive. Establishing clear boundaries helps us strike a balance between nurturing connections with others and preserving our autonomy.

Cultivating gratitude serves as a powerful antidote to the materialistic aspects of our Taurus nature. Instead of fixating solely on material possessions, we can shift our focus to appreciate the abundance of life’s intangible blessings. Practicing gratitude allows us to find fulfillment in simple pleasures and meaningful experiences, reducing the grip of materialism on our lives.

Seeking support from trusted friends, family members, or mentors can provide valuable insights and encouragement as we work to overcome our negative Taurus tendencies.

Concluding remarks

The parallel between the dark side of Taurus and the Marathonian Bull highlights how stubbornness, possessiveness, and resistance to change can lead to destruction and chaos.

We must confront and manage these darker aspects of our Taurus nature to maintain balance and harmony in our lives. Understanding these parallels offers a deeper insight into how mythological symbols can reflect and inform our understanding of astrological archetypes.
