AI and the infamous idea stacking

AI-generated text often reads smoothly and persuasively, giving the impression of intelligence, yet upon closer inspection, it frequently lacks genuine reasoning. The structural problem behind this phenomenon is what I would call idea stacking: the tendency to place multiple conclusions side by side without showing how one naturally follows from another. The result is fluency without depth, coherence without cognitive grounding.

Consider how this manifests in practice. An AI might write: “Developing self-awareness improves emotional regulation, strengthens resilience, and leads to empowerment.” At first glance, it appears insightful; it contains recognizable outcomes that humans value. But if we examine it critically, it becomes clear that this sentence only lists results without explaining transformation. The reader is given the destination without ever seeing the journey. Emotional regulation is not explained; resilience is stated as a fact rather than traced as a process. Empowerment is promised but never demonstrated. The mind cannot inhabit the scenario the text describes, because the causal architecture of mental change is absent.

By contrast, a text that preserves the developmental flow might read: “As we cultivate self-awareness, we begin to notice emotional reactions that once dominated our responses. Recognizing these patterns allows us to intervene, to choose rather than react. Over time, this discipline reshapes our behavior and stabilizes our emotional life, creating a foundation for resilience and a deeper sense of agency.” Here, empowerment is not merely stated—it emerges naturally from the description of mental transformation. The reader can trace the chain of change, imagining the shift from reactivity to deliberate engagement with experience. The difference is not in content but in cognitive accessibility: one version deposits knowledge superficially, the other allows insight to take hold.

Idea stacking persists in AI because these systems optimize for plausibility rather than necessity. Predicting the next likely sentence or phrase favors aggregation over causal sequencing. Training on summaries, advice columns, and motivational texts reinforces this tendency: the AI learns that conclusions strung together sound coherent, authoritative, and convincing. The problem is subtle, because stacked text does not read as broken; it reads as superficially elegant. Only a careful reader notices that it cannot convey transformation, that it cannot model the flow of cognition that produces understanding.

In domains where understanding depends on perceiving change rather than outcomes—psychology, philosophy, consciousness studies—idea stacking undermines learning and reflection. People do not change because they recognize a label; they change because they recognize themselves in a process. If writing bypasses the process, it bypasses engagement. Insight requires inhabiting transformation, not merely nodding at its results.

Idea stacking also compresses time. Stacked writing flattens any temporal progression, presenting static statement instead of emergent dynamic statements that logically build on each other. Readers perceive some vague conclusions, not transitions; they are told what happens, not how it happens. It is a form hocus pocus. Those who do not present with good critical thinking will buy what the AI says.

In essence, idea stacking is not a flaw of style—it is a flaw of cognition: tt replaces reasoning with aggregation, developmental flow with declarative closure. Until AI can model internal transformations and causal sequences rather than merely generating fluent outcomes, its writing will continue to appear intelligent while leaving the reader’s understanding inert. The sophistication is superficial; the insight is absent.
