Pendragon Castle: A Hidden Gem in Mallerstang Valley

Pendragon Castle stands in the remote Mallerstang valley in Cumbria. I visited in on the 4th of March 2025 when I made the cover picture. I read about the it and I wanted to share with you a story of ambition, power, and mystery.

The name “Pendragon” ties the castle to Arthurian myth. Local legend claims that Uther Pendragon built the fortress in the 5th century. He supposedly tried to divert the River Eden to create a defensive moat. The river resisted his efforts, refusing to change its course.

The legend also states that Saxons poisoned the well, killing Uther and his men. While this tale has no historical proof, it adds an air of mystery to the castle’s origins.

The naked truth

The actual construction dates back to the 12th century. Ranulph de Meschines, a Norman nobleman, built it as a defensive stronghold. The castle’s location provided a strategic advantage, controlling movement through the valley. Its thick walls and commanding position made it difficult to attack.

The Scots attacked and burned the castle in the early 14th century during the wars between England and Scotland. The ruin stood abandoned for centuries. Lady Anne Clifford, a determined noblewoman, restored it in the 17th century. She made improvements, repairing walls, adding a new roof, and ensuring it remained habitable. After her death, neglect set in, and the castle fell into ruin again. Today, only remnants of its walls and towers stand, whispering stories of its past.

The runins

The castle’s remote location and crumbling structure create an eerie atmosphere. Locals speak of ghostly figures appearing near the ruins at night. Some claim to hear whispers carried by the wind, as if the past lingers in the valley. The legend of Uther Pendragon adds to the sense of mystery. The idea that his spirit watches over the ruins keeps the myth alive.

Sheep now graze where knights once walked. The castle’s ruins blend into the wild landscape, becoming part of the natural world. The silence of the valley enhances its haunting beauty, making it a place where history and myth intertwine.
