What if your favourite drawing subject isn’t just a habit, but something deeper—your soul mate in art? What obsesses you in the sweetest way, to the point that you return to it again and again, without boredom, without hesitation, without the need to impress? Do you think about it even when you’re not drawing? Does it challenge you just enough to keep you curious? Could you sketch it a thousand times, a million even, and still feel like there’s more to discover?
If you find yourself answering yes to all these questions, you’ve met your soul mate drawing.
For me, it’s the abstract candle holder. I don’t draw it to be realistic. Free from any restraint, I hatch, I distort, I build contrast between shade and light, letting the form emerge and dissolve in layers. Each version feels like a quiet conversation.
Let me tell you a secret: for me, it’s a subtle connection with the transcendent, which is like performing a high form of Zen or Chen. The balance between the light and the darkens is vaguely familiar, but never predictable. Every time I draw it, I meet myself again—and something greater, the spirit of the world.
So what’s yours? What image or form do you return to because it reflects something wordless in you? When you find it, don’t let it go. Draw it as if your soul is speaking through it. Again and again, don’t let go. Love it like it’s your soul’s echo.
